What this worksheet covers
Every line shows a number next to its word, for example 7 seven, in large dotted letters. Numbers 1 to 10 are on page one and 11 to 20 are on page two. Pairing the numeral with the word helps children connect the symbol, the sound and the quantity.
Where this fits in school
In the US, the kindergarten math standards (Common Core, K.CC.A.3) ask children to write numbers from 0 to 20 and to match a written number to a group of objects. This worksheet starts at 1; change the From box to 0 if you want to include zero. In England, the national curriculum for Year 1 asks children to read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words, which is what this sheet practices.
The teen numbers
The numbers 11 to 19 are the hardest part of this range. Their names do not follow a clear pattern (eleven, twelve, thirteen), and the order of the sounds differs from the order of the digits, so children sometimes write 13 as 31. Take it slowly and use objects to build the idea: 13 is one ten and three ones, so draw one group of ten and then three more.
How to use the worksheet
- Say the number and its word together, then trace both.
- Ask your child to count out that many small objects.
- Work on one page at a time. Ten lines is enough for a single sitting.
- Use the pencil for tracing and a crayon to color the stars on the right when each line is done.

Frequently asked questions
Do kindergarteners need to spell number words?
Reading number words matters more than spelling them at this age. Tracing helps children recognize the words, and spelling them on their own usually comes later.
Why do children write 13 as 31?
In English we say "thirteen" with the ones sound first, while we write the tens digit first. Children also reverse digits because they are still learning that direction matters. Counting objects in a group of ten and some ones makes the order clear.
Can I change the range?
Yes. Open the Number range box and change From and To. You can make the worksheet 0 to 10, 1 to 5 or any range up to 1000, and the number words will follow.
