How to write the letter B

The capital B is written in three strokes, and the small b in two strokes. The worksheet above is already set to this letter. It shows a model of each letter with green numbered start points and red direction arrows, then rows of dotted copies to trace and empty space to write on your own. Change the letter case, the size or the number of rows in the settings.

Capital B

Start at the top and draw a straight line down. Go back to the top and draw a bump that curves around and comes back to the middle of the line. Then start at the middle and draw a slightly bigger bump that comes back to the bottom of the line.

Small b

Draw a tall straight line down from the top. Then start on the line between the middle line and the base line, curve up and over to the right, down and around, and back to the line to close the circle.

Teaching tip for B

Both bumps of the capital B touch the straight line, and the bottom bump is a little bigger than the top one. For the small b, use the bat and ball trick: the bat (the tall line) is drawn first on the left, and the ball is added to the right.

The sound of B and words to practice

The letter B usually stands for the sound /b/ as in ball. Words to practice: ball, bear, bus, banana, butterfly, book. Say each word, listen for the first sound and trace the letter. Try the beginning sounds worksheets to match the sound to pictures, or trace the words themselves with word tracing.

Letters that look alike

The letter B is easy to mix up with Letter Dd and Letter Pp. Practice them on separate days, one at a time, and say the starting point out loud each time before the pencil touches the paper.

Frequently asked questions

How can my child tell b and d apart?

Use the bat and ball trick. For b, draw the bat (the tall line) first, then add the ball on its right. For d it is the other way round: draw the ball first, then the bat on its right. Saying the movement out loud while tracing helps most.
