How to write the letter K

The capital K is written in three strokes, and the small k in three strokes. The worksheet above is already set to this letter. It shows a model of each letter with green numbered start points and red direction arrows, then rows of dotted copies to trace and empty space to write on your own. Change the letter case, the size or the number of rows in the settings.

Capital K

Draw a straight line down. Then start at the top right and slide down to the left until you touch the middle of the line. Lift your pencil, start on the slanted line a little above the middle, and slide down to the bottom right.

Small k

Draw a tall straight line down. Then start at the middle line on the right and slide down to the left to touch the line. Lift your pencil, start on the slanted line close to the tall line, and slide down to the base line on the right to make the leg.

Teaching tip for K

On both the capital and small k the two slanted lines must touch the straight line, and they should meet each other near the same spot. If the arms and leg are too far apart, the letter looks like an h with an extra line.

The sound of K and words to practice

The letter K usually stands for the sound /k/ as in kite. Words to practice: kite, key, king, kangaroo, koala, kitten. Say each word, listen for the first sound and trace the letter. Try the beginning sounds worksheets to match the sound to pictures, or trace the words themselves with word tracing.

Letters that look alike

The letter K is easy to mix up with Letter Hh and Letter Xx. Practice them on separate days, one at a time, and say the starting point out loud each time before the pencil touches the paper.

Frequently asked questions

Why do k and c sound the same?

Both can say /k/. K says /k/ almost every time, while c says /k/ before a, o, u and most consonants (cat, cot, cup, clap) and /s/ before e, i and y. A useful spelling hint is that /k/ before e or i is usually written with k: kite, key, kitten.
