How to write the letter F
The capital F is written in three strokes, and the small f in two strokes. The worksheet above is already set to this letter. It shows a model of each letter with green numbered start points and red direction arrows, then rows of dotted copies to trace and empty space to write on your own. Change the letter case, the size or the number of rows in the settings.
Capital F
Start at the top and draw a straight line down. Then draw a line across the top, left to right. Finish with a shorter line across the middle, also left to right.
Small f
Start with a small hook at the top right, curve up and to the left, and go straight down to the base line. Then lift your pencil and cross the tall line with a short line at the middle line, going left to right.
Teaching tip for F
The crossbar of the small f sits on the middle line, level with the tops of letters such as a, n and u. Cross it last, after the tall line is finished. A capital F looks like a capital E with the bottom line missing, which makes the two easy to practice together.
The sound of F and words to practice
The letter F usually stands for the sound /f/ as in fish. Words to practice: fish, frog, fan, feather, fork, flower. Say each word, listen for the first sound and trace the letter. Try the beginning sounds worksheets to match the sound to pictures, or trace the words themselves with word tracing.
Letters that look alike
The letter F is easy to mix up with Letter Ee and Letter Tt. Practice them on separate days, one at a time, and say the starting point out loud each time before the pencil touches the paper.
